Chignahuapan Lagoon

Mist over the water at sunrise, boats, a waterfront open around the clock and, on the Day of the Dead, the stage of the Festival of Light and Life (Festival de la Luz y la Vida).

Nine waters

The water that names the town

Chignahuapan means “over the nine waters”, after the springs of this valley. The lagoon is its postcard: a mirror of water between the town and the sierra, with a waterfront to stroll, a boat dock and viewpoints.

At sunrise

When the lagoon steams

On cold mornings, mist rises from the water and hangs over the surface. It doesn’t last: it fades as soon as the sun warms up. That is why it is worth getting up early.

Tip Bring a sweater or jacket: at 2,290 metres the mornings are truly cold.
